A rather pretty auction gets East-West to a small slam in spades. First, East starts off with a routine opening bid of 1♠ and West bids Jacoby 2NT* which shows at least 4 cards in partner’s major and a game going hand or better. Now follows a flurry of control bids (you can play other things over Jacoby if you prefer) and it eventually ends in East pushing on with a bid of 4NT as RKCB. West’s response of 5♣ shows 0 or 3 key cards (must be 3 given the earlier control bidding) so confident that all of the key cards are in place East leaps to 6♠. There is no point in East looking for a grand slam as West had denied second round control in diamonds with their denial of such a feature by bidding 4♠ over East’s 4♣. With a potential loser in diamonds, how are you going to play this hand to limit your losers to maximum of 1?
